BREAKING NEWS -- More originals being auctioned from the Martignette collection
More original paintings are being auctioned at Heritage Auction on October 20, 2009. These are all from the collection of the late Charles Martignette. The first two are new to the auction market. The last two were auctioned a few years previous at B1 Gallery in Santa Monica, CA:

Here is a "teaching moment" for all who are interested in the process of putting together prints. Go to "The Actual Art" section and turn to the "Playboy Nagel in 90s" subsection. Nagel-Angel kindly posted a photo of the print commonly referred to as "Cascade." You will note that "Cascade" is actually a cropped version of the third piece listed above.
On another note, Heritage has once again placed conservative auction estimates on all of the above paintings. The last time the third and fourth paintings went up to auction, they were sold in the $4000s exclusive of buyer premiums.
So -- If you are interested in bidding, know that it is highly unlikely that any of the Nagel paintings will go for the $2000 estimate placed on them.
nagelite,
THANKS, as always, for all you are doing here and the news and information you post.
RE: Breaking news
I LOVE both the woman in the fishnet body suit and the woman with the headphones on. I also love that I can compare, with those great enlarged images, what made it on to the print and what was missed. I am also so thrilled to be able to see all of them, as the nice detailed scans really allow one to see Pat's mark-making, though I understand he never wanted us to see his effort behind the lines and color.
Yep, I love the prints in Playboy's Patrick Nagel Collection, but nearly all of them were altered in some way to either remove mild nudity [a nipple on this or that one], crop a crotch, or just for their own choices in composition, which (of course) I find to be blasphemous. The only thing that makes it tolerable, is knowing that Pat did the same thing himself with the images that became CN 15, Mirage, and Kristen, so one can really own fault Playboy for following Pat's lead and taking liberties for commercial reasons...thought I still hate it.
RE: More images to be posted.
I am working on moving all of my Nagel image database off of my employer's servers, even though they don't care (It is art after all.), it would be better for the duration of this site if I moved them to a site that isn't dependent on my keeping the same job the next thirty years.
;)
We are all on furlough for several days over the December break, so I hope to have some time then to port over my images without concerns that some third party will complain and have my images deleted.
Today was a good day for being a seller on the Nagel market. Records were broken for recent sales of originals.
Here is how the four pieces at Heritage did in the sale as listed in order that Nagelite posted them:
$7,170.00
$3,883.75
$13,742.50
$9,560.00 (not bad for a painting of a woman on a toilet)
Aaron,
Thanks for the report! I have to say that I thought all of those pieces (minus the one on the toilet, but only for the subject matter) have a significant amount of basic aesthetic appeal, at least to me. Very strong works and just GREAT images.
LOL figures I'm the odd one out then as I like the toilet one best. I was thinking of that one and the one of the gal shaving her arm pit would be perfect side by side companions in a bathroom setting. :)
As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Toilet Girl has a certain charm I will give you that Liluadc.
Your quote,

I wouldn't think that set records of any sort. In fact, I am somewhat surprised at the prices.
